As part of our “Inspiring Working Mums” series, The Hon. Kelly O’Dwyer MP shares her advice to help other working Mums.
The Hon. Kelly O’Dwyer MP, Politician.
My best advice for your career is …
There are many steps we women can take to empower ourselves, and to help empower others. To quote Catherine the Great “I have no way to defend my borders, but to extend them.” So, the only way to sustain and protect the rights that are now recognised as ours, is to keep pushing the boundaries until women have all the options available to men. This way we all, men and women, have more choices, and our children, both girls and boys all live in a richer world.
Building on this, to support women in the workforce, we need to change community attitudes. Attitudes that create false barriers for women seeking out senior positions and I dare say, men seeking to play more active roles in family life. We need to continue creating a leadership culture.
My most satisfying thing about being a Mum is …
A new way of looking at the world. The early morning cuddles, the bedtime books, the myriad of ‘why’ questions and the acceptance that you shouldn’t sweat the small stuff.
My best advice for managing the juggle of work and family is …
Juggling a career and motherhood is not always easy, but as millions of Australians know, it can be done – in my case with the support of my amazing husband, family, colleagues and staff.
